Cold Laser Therapy / Low Level Light Therapy

At Healthy Start Chiropractic & Performance, we use Cold Laser Therapy — also known as Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) or Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) — to help reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and support the body’s natural healing process.

This gentle, non-invasive therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular repair and improve tissue recovery without heat, discomfort, or downtime. Cold laser therapy is commonly used for musculoskeletal pain, sports injuries, nerve irritation, inflammation, and soft tissue healing.

Whether you are recovering from an injury, struggling with chronic pain, or looking to accelerate healing and performance, cold laser therapy may help support your recovery naturally.

What is Cold Laser Therapy?

Cold laser therapy uses low-intensity light energy delivered through a handheld device placed over injured or inflamed tissues. Unlike surgical lasers, cold lasers do not cut or burn tissue. Instead, they work at the cellular level to encourage healing and tissue repair.

This therapy is often referred to as:

*Cold Laser Therapy

*Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

*Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT)

*Low Level Light Therapy

The treatment is painless, relaxing, and typically takes only a few minutes per area.

How Does Cold Laser Therapy Work?

Cold laser therapy works by delivering light energy into damaged tissues where it is absorbed by the mitochondria — the “energy centers” of the cell. This process helps stimulate cellular activity and ATP production, which may improve the body’s ability to heal and recover.  Because it works at the cellular level, many patients report feeling improvement in both pain and recovery over a series of treatments.

Research suggests cold laser therapy may help:

Reduce Inflammation

Improve Circulation

Decrease Pain

Accelerate Tissue Repair

Support Nerve Healing

Improve Mobility & Function

What Does Treatment Feel Like?

Most patients feel little to no sensation during treatment. The laser is applied directly over the affected area for several minutes at a time.

Treatments are:

*Non-invasive

*Comfortable

*Drug-free

*Safe for most patients

*Performed in-office

Some patients notice improvement after only a few visits, while others experience the best results with a series of treatments depending on the severity and duration of their condition.

Research & Evidence

Research on photobiomodulation and low level laser therapy continues to grow, especially in the areas of musculoskeletal pain, inflammation, and tissue healing.

Studies and systematic reviews have shown promising results for:

Chronic low back pain

Tendinopathies

Osteoarthritis

Musculoskeletal pain conditions

Tissue repair and recovery

Pain reduction and improved function

While results vary depending on the condition being treated, many studies support cold laser therapy as a helpful adjunct to rehabilitation and conservative care.
